Named after a man who became wealthy when he began investing in San Francisco real estate, James Irvine also became a silent partner in the sheep raising venture Flint Bixby & Co. The purchase of the 48,800-acre Rancho San Joaquin in 1864 and the 47,200-acre Rancho Lomas de Santiago in 1866 marked the beginning of their operations in Southern California. In 1867, Irvine married Henrietta Maria Rice, the daughter of prominent Cleveland, Ohio, educator, writer, poet and State Senator Harvey Rice, a direct descendant of Edmund Rice.

Irvine is a suburban incorporated city in Orange County, California. A planned city, mainly developed by the Irvine Company since the 1960s. Formally incorporated on December 28, 1971, the 66 square mile city has a population of over 212,000 and has annexed in the past an undeveloped area to the north. In 1878, James Irvine acquired most if the 110,000 acres that stretched 23 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana River. When James died in 1886 the ranch was inherited by his son, James Irvine, Jr. who incorporated it into The Irvine Company. James, Jr. shifted the ranch operations to field crops, olive and citrus crops.
